Case Study | Vacuum Pump Mechanical Loosening Alert for Oil Filtration Equipment: Bolt Tightening Mitigates Equipment Risks

Release time:2026-10-15

In industrial equipment maintenance, oil filtration systems are critical for ensuring oil quality, and the operational condition of their rotary‑vane vacuum pumps directly affects both filtration performance and the safety of the main equipment. If mechanical looseness develops between the motor and the pump, it can lead to increased vibration and accelerated wear of connecting components in mild cases, or, in severe instances, to base‑anchor bolt failure and equipment displacement—potentially causing unexpected shutdowns or even interruptions in oil supply to the primary equipment.

Recently, the Zhongyun Technology Intelligent O&M platform, through continuous monitoring and trend analysis, successfully issued an early warning of mechanical loosening in the rotor‑vane vacuum pump motor and pump unit of a large enterprise’s oil filtration system. The platform also guided the enterprise in performing tightening operations, effectively preventing sudden equipment shutdowns and potential safety hazards to critical assets that could have resulted from continued degradation.

1. When the vibration amplitude exceeds the threshold, the platform immediately issues an alarm.

In mid-September 2026, after the rotary vane vacuum pump was started up, the platform detected significantly elevated vibration amplitudes at multiple measurement points, including the motor’s free end and the pump housing’s free end. Consequently, a series of alarms were triggered—ranging from fixed-threshold exceedances to trend‑prediction alerts. The system automatically routed these notifications to operations and maintenance personnel, clearly indicating the fault locations, alarm severity levels, and occurrence times, thereby helping to pinpoint the issue for on-site troubleshooting.

II. Data-Driven Precision Diagnostics to Identify Mechanical Loosening

Upon receiving the alarm, the Zhongyun Diagnostics team conducted an analysis based on the equipment’s operating parameters. The vibration amplitude at the 3× motor rotational frequency was notably high, consistent with the typical characteristics of mechanical looseness. Based on this comprehensive assessment, the team concluded that both the motor and the pump were experiencing loosening, and the platform recommended scheduling a shutdown for inspection at an appropriate time.

3. On-site shutdown verification: Vibration decreases after bolt tightening.

On-site, in accordance with the platform’s recommendations, a shutdown for inspection was scheduled on the morning of September 17. It was confirmed that the anchor bolts of the motor and pump were loose, which closely matched the diagnostic findings. The maintenance team promptly tightened the loose bolts. Following the equipment’s restart, monitoring data showed a significant reduction in the RMS vibration velocity at the motor’s free end, and the unit resumed stable operation, with the potential hazard fully eliminated.

IV. Lessons from the Case: Intelligent Operations and Maintenance Equip Critical Equipment with an “Early-Warning Radar”

The successful early warning and rapid resolution of the mechanical loosening fault in this rotary vane vacuum pump fully demonstrate the practical value of the online intelligent operations and maintenance platform:

  1. Continuous trend monitoring and proactive risk alerts: Issue an early warning when vibration amplitudes exceed acceptable limits, allowing sufficient time for tightening and preventing connection failure that could lead to sudden shutdowns.
  2. Data-Driven Precision Diagnostics: Accurately diagnose mechanical looseness issues and specify the correct tightening direction for bolts to avoid unnecessary disassembly and inspection.
  3. End-to-end closed-loop management: Establish a complete closed-loop process encompassing “alarm notification—fault diagnosis—on-site tightening—repair verification,” ensuring the stable operation of the oil filtration system.

Equipment failures rarely occur suddenly; rather, they result from the gradual accumulation of hidden risks. Zhongyun Technology continues to deepen its expertise in industrial intelligent operations and maintenance, leveraging monitoring data to deliver fault‑early‑warning and diagnostic services for critical equipment across various industries. This helps enterprises shift from “reactive emergency repairs” to “predictive maintenance,” thereby strengthening their safety‑production safeguards.
